Would You Believe?

Would you believe that an unbreakable friendship started with a stroke of luck, work experience, and a family’s youngest son? That’s exactly what happened for Mr. Steve Washburn. Steve became friends with Dale Rosene, or Ishtar as he’s called on the Alaska Great Lakes Project, when he first went on the trip with his youngest son, Curtis, in 1999.

“I was the last person chosen that year,” said Steve, “Dale chose me because he needed somebody who had experience with water testing.” Mr. Washburn, who is retired now, worked for the City of Marshall Waste Water Treatment Plant for 37 years. “This is my 12th year as a member of AGLP,” Steve told me, “my favorite part of the trip is to watch the kids learn and grow.”

Up until Steve’s first trip with AGLP, he never knew Ishtar. Then after that first trip together, they formed a friendship that has lasted 12 years and is still continuing to grow. Because of his work experience, Steve ended up with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and one of his closest friends.
